Course Content

In the Chemistry courses to be given within the scope of the winter camp, it is intended to provide students with a broader perspective on selected basic chemistry subjects at the university level, beyond the high school curriculum. In this direction, atom and molecule structure, chemical bonding, ionic solids and transition metal chemistry and coordination compounds, which are not included in the high school curriculum, will be explained with the quantum approach. At the end of the camp, it is aimed that the students develop/reinforce their existing knowledge on the chemistry subjects, learn new subjects and gain information at the university level.

Önder Metin Assoc. Dr. Faculty of Science
Dr. Önder Metin received his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from Çukurova University, Adana, Turkey in 2002 with the second honor degree. Then, he got a research assistant position at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey where he received his M.Sc. degree in 2006 and Ph.D. degree in 2010 at Department of Chemistry. During his Ph.D. studies, he studied as a TUBITAK research fellow at Department of Chemistry, Brown University (Rhode Island/USA) in 2009 and at Inorganic Chemistry Research Institute, Darmstadt Technical University, Germany in 2010. After his Ph.D., he moved to Department of Chemistry, Atatürk University, Erzurum, Turkey as an Assistant Professor in 2011. He then joined the Department of Chemistry, Brown University as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in 2012 for one year. After the post-doctoral studies, he turned back to Atatürk University and promoted to the Associate Professor level in 2014. He then moved to Koç University as an Associate Professor in 2018.
Course content

Molecular biology and genetics course, which will be given as part of the winter camp, aims to provide students with basic molecular biology information. In this course, the fundamentals of molecular biology and different fields of study will be introduced. Topics covered each week will include DNA, DNA replication, cell biology and cell division, cancer biology and genetic engineering.

At the end of the course, students will have knowledge of the importance of cell biology in understanding the basis of diseases, the basics and treatment of different types of cancer, the importance of genetics from past to present, and the relationship of stem cells with tissue repair and cancer progression.

Ders sonunda öğrenciler hücre biyolojisinin hastalıkların temelini anlamadaki önemi, farklı kanser tiplerinin temelleri ve tedavisi, genetik biliminin geçmişten günümüze önemi ve kök hücrenin doku tamiri ve kanser progresyonu ile olan ilişkisi bilgilerine sahip olacaklardır.

Melis Dilara Arslanhan Gül Lecturer Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering
Completed her Bachelor’s degree in İzmir Institute of Technology in the departmant of Molecular Biology and Genetics. Later on, started her master’s in Université de Paris-Sud in France in the field of oncology on the synergetic effect of the small molecule inhibitors on leukemias. Worked in several institutions in France such as ENS Cachan and CEA as a researcher. In 2017, started her PhD in Koç Univesity in Cytoskeleton lab where she studied the regulation of the centrosome/cilium complex biogenesis using proximity-based proteomics approaches. Currently, she is working as an instructor for the cell biology and physiology lab and biochemistry lab in Koc University.
Course Objective

Students will gain insight about DNA, DNA Replication, Control of Protein Synthesis and Gene Expression, Cell division, Mendelian Genetics, and Genetic Engineering.
