Course Description

The Environmental Science course aims to raise awareness in high school students about current environmental issues and prospective solutions. This interactive course aims to show how environmental science is intervowen with sustainability principles in everyday life. The course introduces major environmental science principles including greenhouse gases, global warming, water cycle and extreme weather events, ocean warming and acidification, soil pollution and degradation, biodiversity loss, plastic pollution, microplastics, excess trash, food waste, etc. UN SDGs, the Paris Treaty and IPCC reports will be introduced and discussed. Assessment tools for personal ecological footprints will be used to assess personal impact including carbon footprint, water footprint and digital footprint. The current state of research and innovations, as well as prospective solutions for environmental problems will be discussed. High school students will leave this course with a basic knowledge on critical environmental concepts and issues, a familiarity with climate change and the scientific data analysis and interpretation. Students will also acquire an awareness of the effect of our everyday choices at a personal and community level and will start brainstorming on possible ways to start a change.
