Course Introduction:
The 21st century global era is different from previous eras with the impact of technologies. It is now possible, or even the norm, to be connected to much of the world not only in institutional spaces but also at home and at any time. In the forum of global interaction, this connection across cultures and nations enables us to share human experiences, exchange knowledge, develop understanding and work together mainly through writing (Harper, 2011)*. It is due to this era of connected experience that it is “an exciting time to be writing now: the old rules have been erased, it seems, and to some extent everyone, including the new writer, is free to make his or her own” (Baines in Singleton and Luckhurst, 1996:129)**. It must therefore be recognized that it is at this point where creativity comes into play and promotes writing for endless creative possibilities.
Course Description:
In this course, which will be carried out in the form of workshops, learners will explore different literary genres – prose and poetry – through the lens of various narrative voices. By means of textual intervention, they will first create their own voice within the stories by using creative thinking, references from their own life, and their greatest tool: imagination. Learners will then focus on some common literary devices used in poems, and discover how these devices could contribute to their own work. Also, they will build stories in collaboration, applying the literacy techniques and necessary tools in practice while also zooming in on the power of illustrations. Ultimately, learners will generate a small creative writing portfolio of their production that represents their journey to make the language their own.
